First: is anyone else disappointed by Scott Pilgrim Volume 4? I was so excited when I bought it, now I'm just kind of sad.

In other news, thesis has a temporary hold on my life. Keep pretending I don't exist, and I'll come back somewhere around the end of April.

School's out.

I'm officially a thesis student. I thought this day would never come, and now the that it's here, the fear and misery is beginning to set in. Anybody have any funny one-liners that could inspire a two-minute film?

Ten Art Facts about me. I was tagged by :iconweja:

1) I don't like sketchbooks. People always like to snatch them out of your hands, flip through them and pass judgement. Because I know everything I do in a sketchbook will be seen, I get really tense and I rarely draw well. Thus I use sketchbooks as a mini portfolio, only drawing in them when I'm having a really good day art-wise

2) This relates to the first fact, but I do most of my drawing on scrap paper. I will honestly draw on just about anything, I horde discarded paper. I recycle all the drawn on scraps that I don't like, and save the good ones in a drawer.

3) I'm sort of an art MacGyver - I like using anything I can get my hands on to draw with. Dying Sharpies, ugly Crayola pencils I find on the ground, sticks dipped in ink, my dirty fingers, etc.. It's mostly because I'm a miser and I don't like to use expensive materials if I'm just playing around, which I usually am.

4) Ink's my favorite medium. I'm still looking for the perfect refillable brush pen (any recommendations?)

5) When I was in elementary school I drew on my desk all the time. My teachers would get really frustrated and my parents were called in on more than on occasion. I eventually confined my class doodles to the margins on my notes and the backs of test papers, but I still got in trouble sometimes.

6) As a kid I would draw lying on the living room floor in front of the tv. I had this weird habit of writing down snippets of whatever dialogue I heard, so most of my old notebooks look kind of schizophrenic. Kind of really schizophrenic. I had to train myself not to do it because people teased me (see fact #1).

7) I was the biggest Sailor Moon fan in junior high and the beginning of high school. I don't know why, but I was obsessed. I drew my first "anime eye" in the 7th grade.

8) I pretend to hate color, but I'm actually just afraid of it. I don't know what a "good" painting is - everything about color and design feels very foreign to me.

9) I've been a "serious" art student for eight years. I'm one of those people who would have no identity if drawing was somehow taken away from me. There isn't a single day when I haven't drawn something (I think).

10) The majority of my cartoons are naked. Distorting the human form is what interests me most. Hands and feet are especially fun.

UPDATE: I knew this would happen - as soon as I signed up for this meme, school deicided to kick my ass. Sorry guys, the sketches will be coming very slowly.

--------------------------------------------------------------

You guys jumped right on this shit, it scared me a little. Thanks for the quick and enthusiatic response, it was quite flattering. People and requests in order of appearence:

I'm just warning you now, these could look like ASS. Please don't take it personally, I think you all rock. I actually got pretty lucky - I've been meaning to draw things for most of the people on this list. I'm going to try to get at least one of these drawings done a week so this meme doesn't drag on forever. So keep your eyes peeled.

So, being the huge follower that I am, I signed up for that crazy meme all the kids are doing right now. THE FIRST 10 PEOPLE WHO RESPOND TO THIS JOURNAL ENTRY WILL GET A FREE SKETCH of anything their sick, little heart desires, courtesy of me.

The fine print:
a) if you make a request, you must duplicate the offer. Basically, you have to do 10 sketches for friends/well meaning strangers. It shouldn't be too hard if you really half-ass it.
b) don't be shy in your request, but do understand it will probably be just a loose pencil drawing. I might go crazy with it if I get inspired, but school keeps me on a tight leash.
c) (I added this one myself for a few of my DA peeps) if you've already done/are in the process of doing this meme, you may still request a sketch from me, no strings attached.

So tell me what you want.
I once again narrowly escaped death this past semester, and now I'm livin' large and pretending the whole goddamn year never happened. I'm so happy it's summer. As for my film, I tried uploading it to the internet with little to no sucess, so unfortunately it will forever remain a mystery to the DA community. Sucks to be you guys, you're missing out. That shit got me an A+.

In terms of activity, I've been drawing a lot but producing little. Right now something in my style seems lacking - I can't figure out exactly what displeases me so much about it, but in the end it means I'm presently without much inspiration or determination to execute complete illustrations. I'm trying to work through it, though (I haven't lost hope yet).

Finally, I had a good time at MoCCA this weekend. I managed to grab a copy of Vasilis Lolos and Becky Cloonan's Nebuli, along with a handful of other quality indie-comics. They bring me such joy.

I joined an animation group! Check out our blog Fake Heads to catch behind-the-scenes action of our first animated short (currently in production) and miscellaneous sketches I don't plan on posting here! You'll enjoy it, I swear.
Man, am I tired of seeing my old journal entry.

It's been almost half a year since I updated this thing, though I have uploaded a piece or two in that time. Nothing new or interesting to report, except maybe that I'm currently working on a film in the style of Ralph Steadman (an illustrator) which I may upload onto DA upon its completion. I am hoping to work on more personal projects once school lets out, but life has a funny habit of getting in the way, so we'll see. Until then, my participation in the DA community will probably remain minimal at best. I want to thank everyone who still watches me and the select few who leave comments, it really is greatly appreciated.

... I need to graduate already.

I Sing the Body Electric

Sat Oct 15, 2005, 4:37 PM
So, in case you haven't noticed, I haven't been feeling the whole "community" thing lately. I still visit every few days or so and check out everyone's work, but I have trouble coming up with meaningful comments to leave behind. You guys still rock, on the real, yo. Especially my core group of friends who still comment on my occasional submissions.

Speaking of which, it's not that I don't want to submit work, it's more like I have nothing to give. I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out what I want to do with my art. I almost quit animation two weeks ago in favor of illustration, but I soon realized that wouldn't make me much happier. The fact of the matter is, I just want to draw. All day long, I just want to fill up sketchbooks with stupid floating heads and studies of perspective. Finished pieces are a drag. At the same time, I'm coming to like my work more. I've been trying to be every other artist for so long, I've only just begun to realize the only way I'll ever get anywhere is if I do my own thing. I imagine I'll be more productive once I value my own worth a little more.

OH! I went to my first concert yesterday - Weezer and the Foo Fighters somewhere in New Jersey. My sister and I went for Weezer (because we're nerds) and they were cool, but the Foo Fighters! Holy shit, do they know how to put on a show. They were just so fucking amazing, I had a blast. I'm a little sad, though, we got there half an hour late and missed Hot Hot Heat. Le sigh.

Anyway, how are you?

Leaving for the Summer

Wed Jun 15, 2005, 7:51 AM
First, an apology to all the people in my DA clique. I haven't been able to submit or respond to deviations for the past few days (weeks?) because MY COMPUTER IS A PIECE OF SHIT. The good news is, at the end of August I will be buying myself a fancy, top-of-the-line laptop. The bad news is, in order to afford it I need to work.

From June 15th to August 25 I will be in Clinton, NY, cooking for the campers and staff of Camp Rising Sun. I will have either extremely limited internet access or none at all, so I'm going to have to say good-bye for now. I will be back in August, hopefully with something worthwhile to post, so until then, try not to forget about me.

Summer Vacation

Wed May 25, 2005, 10:56 PM
Edit: I'm happy, I swear! I have no idea how this entry came out so angsty.
----------------------

Nothing to report, I just realized my last journal entry was mad old and shit.

I've got no school, no job, no real responsibilities, and as a result, my mind and body have basically shut down. I'm just too self indulgent, and even though I realize it's my lack of discipline that's at fault, I'm making no effort to correct the situation. It was fun in the beginning, but it's starting to wear thin. I don't know what it's going to take to get me moving again, but hopefully it will come soon.

Other than that, life's been really good. On June 6th, I'm going to be twenty years old. The concept that I will no longer be a teenager is still beyond my grasp. I've only recently begun to think that even if you are an adult, you don't necessarily have to feel like one. I always imagined I would be much wiser and more mature. And that I would have gotten laid by now.

Dear people on my watch list: I have no intention of commenting on the 101 deviations in my inbox. They're all quite lovely, but my heart's just not in it.

Story Assistance

Alright guys, think fast. I need story ideas for my animation final on accoun'a I'm really horrible at that sort of thing. It's completely open, so just go for it. Anything that comes to mind, the more involved the better. I need at least a minute's worth of material, which may not sound like much, but a lot of shit can go down in sixty seconds. I'm counting on you.

A Quickly Passing Feeling of Elation

Thu Feb 17, 2005, 10:29 PM
I've been sort of between misery and apathy regarding my school work this semester, but at this moment - this brief moment in time - I'm really happy to be studying animation. Two nights ago I was ready to hang myself in the bathroom, I was so tired of working, but tonight I feel good. I obviously don't know the industry side of things, but as a student, it's a really great community to be a part of. So what if my sleep schedule is permanently fucked, it's better than accounting or some equally unfulfilling occupation. That's one thing I never want in life, to work with money. I don't mind living within my means.

To all those who haven't seen it, I recommend Kirikou and the Sorceress. I wish America would produce more meaningful cartoons like this. We should stop hating the French and work together to bring back traditional animation!

Also, please name three things that would be interesting to either animate or animate with. Try to think outside the box with this one.

Winning and Losing

Wed Jan 5, 2005, 6:41 PM
So I got into SVA again. I know I should be happy, but I'm actually extraordinarily depressed. It's been months since I've felt this bad. I don't know if I'm ready to give up my life at Pratt - as much as I complain, I love my school.

On a happy note, I've been drawing like crazy and it feels great. I've been in art school for so long, I started to think the only way to improve was through classes and observation. While that's obviously a huge component (observation especially), something must be said for drawing continuously from imagination alone. It's sort of like this vacation I was finally able to stop, look back and really internalize the things I've learned. I don't know if my style's "evolved" exactly, but my approach definitely feels different.

Ever since winter break began, all I've been interested in is heavy orchestral music and post-apocalyptic manga. Any recommendations?

Aw, man

Wed Nov 10, 2004, 7:05 PM
Four more years of you know who. I'm over it, I'll go back to writing about more important things - like myself, for instance.

My SVA interview sucked. I came off as some blundering little teen fresh out of high school, but that wasn't the issue. It never occurred to me when getting my porfolio together that they would want something RECENT. Slick, Kat. Way to go. I'm pretty confident that I got in (never a good sign...), but I'm pretty sure it won't be for the spring 2005 semester. I provided absolutely no proof that I have any sort of experience with animation. I was hoping with my transcript and the syllabi I provided they would just assume I had some sort of ability, but my interviewer was inclined to believe I didn't know much past the terminology, and I didn't even show them a friggin' storyboard (mostly because I don't have one, but I could have made something up). Damn it damn it damn it. I can't afford Pratt for another semester!

But it's okay. I am one with the universe now. It's not as though the situation has really been decided yet. Thus, I wait. I know I seemed stressed out about every aspect of my life and art especially, but deep down, I'm happy. Not even that deep down; I think my happiness is pretty close to the surface. I'm fine just being alive.

Goodbye America

Thu Nov 4, 2004, 8:04 AM
I'm sure you guys have had it with rants on American politics but, well, it's my journal. So there. Anyway, Chuck Schumer was on the Daily Show last night and a pretty interesting question was raised. Democrats have always maintained that they represent the common man, but considering what happened yesterday, is that really the case? I live in New York, and I hear that the city is like another world compared to the rest of America, but I never realized how much our ideologies really clashed. Look at how much of the country eats up Bush's war mongering, pro-choice opposing, homosexual-hating propaganda. They feel this baboon and his cabinet of asses represents what they stand for. How can we be so closed-minded? Where did all this fear and hate come from? And seriously, folks, what the FUCK happened to separation of church and state? I'm a Christian, but until Jesus runs for office, I don't want to hear stupid shit about what role faith plays in a candidate's life.

Not that I'm a Kerry fan, but a new President would have meant a fresh start. With Kerry we had a chance. I think this past Election Day proves that America's reign is finally over. Considering the current state of things, I can say in full honesty it's a good thing. I pray to God - the same God the Bush administration is using to manipulate the country - that the next world power is a progressive one.

That was supposed to be my big finish, but I want to add one last disclaimer. I don't think Bush is what's wrong with this country. If it wasn't him, it would have been some other dumb schmuck. I think the false image we've been projecting for so long is finally starting to come down, and out intolerant, hypocritical ways are finally being brought to light. Maybe we were never really about freedom and liberty for all. Maybe it was just some kind of joke amongst the founding fathers that never got old. It wounds my heart to think what savages both my fellow countrymen and quite possibly myself really are, and what a hideous monstrosity of a country we've created. On behalf of America, I apologize for what we've done and what we will do in the future.

In other news, I am reapplying to SVA and trying to survive this semester with its assorted mean teachers and time consuming projects, so if my comments on your deviations aren't up to snuff, I apologize. I am, however, going to get 2004's Pigeon Eater picture up by Halloween, no matter what.

Shit, I'm late for class. There was more to this entry, I swear, but it'll have to wait.

repetition, variation?

Sun Oct 10, 2004, 11:51 AM
How many times can you screw up a walk cycle before you lose your sanity? This is the question foremost on my mind. Aside from that, I've actually gotten some homework done ahead of time for a change, instead of cramming all my assignments into one sleepless night. I rejoice, as should you all.

Please excuse me.
